The small, roundish cigar-like cannagars, known as cannagars, have long been a mainstay of Mexican cuisine. Although they are used as a means of smoking rather than smoking marijuana, they also can be used for consumption of other drugs such as cocaine, amphetamines and phencyclidine, as well. Many of these cannagars are made in Mexico from imported/produced ingredients, although others are made within the country itself. The majority of them are imported from China, India, Jamaica, Thailand and the Philippines, where they are especially popular. They are known throughout Mexico and Central America but because of the illegal status of cannabis in most countries of Central America, they are rarely sold on the street (unless they are being prepared as a medical-grade product).
Cannagars are typically hand-rolled in the traditional manner, which involves using a rolling pin between a number of sheets of dried flower or leaves and pressed between two rods of wood to form a closed tube. Cannagaras are usually shorter than their cannabis counterparts, measuring up to an inch and half. However, they may be as short as one inch and as long as three inches, depending on the type of cannagar. Cannagaras that are too long often end up with hardened buds which can choke the smoker when consumed.
The two most common types of cannagar are the rolled flower or gram and cigar shaped cannagar. The gram looks just like a normal cigar with a flat base, a long handle and a ring on the end. The handle is short and can be wrapped around the neck to minimize smoking. A single gram of cannabis may be divided into as many as four separate cigars; each cigar has about one inch of stems wrapped in flower or gram material.
Cigar shaped cannagar, or "rolled" cannagar, functions much the same way as the rolled cigar except that it is smoked instead of burned. A single cigar is made by manually rolling a small cigar with a mold of the desired shape, usually rounded and thick. Each stem has two tiny holes which connect to another stem within the mold. The mold is then carefully pulled apart, allowing the individual stems to be separated and smoked.
Some Cannagars are also sold in capsule form, containing a single gram of dried flowers or marijuana leaves. This type of cannagar is very similar to the capsules used in inhalation medications (OTC), as it is pressed into the mouth rather than swallowed whole. Because the entire flower and leaf are inside of the capsule, there is little danger of accidental swallowing. This makes this type of cannagar a particularly appealing choice for anyone who suffers from asthma or bronchial passages. Since the pills dissolve in the stomach, there is no need for any inhalation of the concentrated solution - another reason this method is popular among sufferers.
Cannagars come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They are traditionally manufactured from flowers picked during the summer months, although some can be purchased throughout the year. While some have small amounts of cannagar, others are very small, containing only a few milligrams. This amount makes them difficult to consume; many users find it to be an ineffective treatment, since even a very small amount of cannagar will usually overwhelm the small amount of bud present. In addition, most cannagars are sold in stores where smoking cannabis is prohibited, making them a novelty item for people who partake in cannabis use but do not want to expose their body to the risk of prosecution.
